No Rice for Pot  (from the Rice Pot series) (2011-2012), HD video, 6.06 minutes

No Rice for Pot was filmed at Sophal’s hometown, Pu Village, in the Kiri Vong District, southern Cambodia. Sophal spent time explaining her concept and interviewing local women about their work in the kitchen, and the photographed them in natural light, contrasted by blacked rice pots. The collaborative community based project took almost 12 months to complete, the results of which are thoughtfully explored in this docu-style video.

Neak Sophal graduated as a graphic designer from the Royal University of Fine Arts, Phnom Penh before exploring photography as her preferred medium. Often described as a performative photographer, Sophal is also a skilled storyteller, often activating her work through participatory workshops, that highlight daily life and rituals. She has exhibited widely nationally and internationally.
